The City of Mill Creek's Art & Beautification Board (A&B) was proud to work with Everett Public Schools to highlight an exciting new Creative Writing event in which students at Jackson High School (JHS) participated: The Poet's Perspective competition.
This new poetry contest offered a way for JHS students to express their connections with the Mill Creek community: what their connection means to them, what makes Mill Creek special, and how it shapes their experiences. Through vivid imagery, heartfelt storytelling, or powerful observations, students were encouraged to reflect and write from the heart.
The idea for the contest started with Ms. Pratt and her Creative Writing class at JHS, and Spark! Creativity. “Giving the students a chance to share their work with the community has been a passion of mine for a while, and I am very impressed with the work they produced,” said Ms. Pratt. “I am thankful for all of the partners in this project and members of our selection committee, including student ASB leaders, JHS staff, Mill Creek Library staff, and Spark! Creativity, and the A&B Board members who helped choose the winning pieces.”
“I am both pleased and excited to support our city's youth in their creative endeavors in the arts,” said Jeanne Smart, Vice Chair of the A&B Board, “the 'Poet's Perspective' competition encourages these youngsters in their literary pursuits, the opportunity for reflection, expression, and the important element of ‘audience’ for their work. At the same time, the project allows our community members to get to know these young people better and appreciate their creative expression through poetry. I might add that seeing the students' work underscores my enormous appreciation for their teachers' competence and care.”
See all students’ work displayed at multiple locations beginning May 31:
